A Sebastopol bakery recently found itself in an unexpected spotlight after a surprise visit from actor, writer and director Nathan Fielder.
Fielder, the Vancouver-born comedian known for his understated, satirical style, recently stopped by Society Bakery and Cafe in west Sonoma County. The bakery shared news of the visit in an Instagram post on July 1, which has since drawn more than 6,000 likes and dozens of comments.
“It was certainly a fun surprise to have Nathan stop by, and we’re grateful for all of the kind attention our little bakery has received,” said Jeannette Barbieri, chef and owner of Society Bakery and Cafe, in an email.

Fielder is best known for the Comedy Central series “Nathan for You” and the HBO series “The Rehearsal,” which he created, directed, co-wrote and stars in. “The Rehearsal” earned Primetime Emmy nominations for outstanding writing and directing last year and won the 2022 Independent Spirit Award for best new non-scripted or documentary series.
Society Bakery and Cafe, located inside Sebastopol’s Antique Society vintage marketplace, offers a variety of pastries, including over 50 gluten-free options, as well as preserves and sandwiches. It also serves a variety of creative coffee drinks, matchas and lemonades, such as a banana bread latte and a peach mango spritzer.
Barbieri has earned recognition at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, winning multiple awards for her baked goods and preserves between 2019 and 2024. Her honors include Best of Show for her ginger molasses cookies in 2021; Best of Show Pantry and Double Gold for her Beet Relish with Horseradish in 2022; Best of Show for her Brandied Pear Tartlet in 2023; and Best of Show Pantry for her Habanero Peach Jam in 2024.
