Best Breakfast in Wine Country

Best Sonoma County Breakfast spots for eggs, pancakes, crepes, Huevos Rancheros and all your favorite morning grub

A few of Sonoma County and Wine Country’s favorite breakfast spots…
Santa Rosa
Jeffrey’s Hillside Cafe: Former John Ash & Co. chef does Wine Country dining for breakfast — with some Southern hints. Lemon blintzes, chicken fried steak, sticky bun french toast. MORE

Dierk’s Parkside :
A significant local chef turns his attention to breakfast, brunch and lunch, bringing his culinary chops and Slow Food ideals to the table. There’s always a line on weekends. Fresh donuts, poached egg salad, duck confit, Country Benedict. MORE

Carlos Country Kitchen
: It’s nothing fancy, but there’s some seriously good grub here, served up in mega portions. Biscuits and gravy, pancakes, scrambled eggs, Huevos rancheros.
Cookhouse: Tucked far out of focus, this tiny cafe is breakfast gold. Nothin’ fancy, but top-notch biscuits and gravy.
Bruno’s on Fourth: Great eats from a casual, neighborhood restaurant. Chef Rick Bruno is a solid local chef, and does breakfast Sonoma Style. Biscuits and gravy, Dungeness Crab Benedict, homefries.
Hank’s Creekside: Local mom and pop featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Don’t expect fancy, but do expect long weekend lines and terrific pancakes. Plus, a nice view of the creek, if you’re lucky enough to get a window seat.
Crepevine: Bay Area creperie opened in Santa Rosa featuring both sweet and savory crepes, omelets, salads, sandwiches. Open breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  1. I love macs deli I only wish they were open on sundays! As far as omelette express, please stop judging the waitresses they’re just nice girls trying to make a living. I worked there for 4 years. The owner is a genuine creep who thinks that if he keeps putting his name on the SR city council ballot that eventually the odds will weigh in his favor.

Comment: Everyone should check out Lita’s Cafe in the Long’s shopping center on Mendecino. She used to have Lita’s Coffee shop on Sebastapol rd and now she is back in business and better than ever! the custom omelette’s are amazing and you cant beat the serving sizes and to top it off its priced pretty cheap! The service is good and the owner is really cheery and attentive to all of her customers! Lita’s Cafe 1973 Mendocino Santa Rosa,ca Call for take out as well…7075751628!

Comment: Checked out Dierk’s this past Sunday for the first time. Loved it. Great atmosphere, service and the food was very good. The Huevos Rancheros were assembled differently than I’ve had before, with queso fresco etc sandwiched between two corn tortillas, the tomatillo sauce was great. We also had their corned beef hash, not cooked mixed with potatoes like Hank’s (which are also good). The potatoes were on top with the egg. Delicious. Had a fried bread thing, kind of like a burrito sized donut with cinnamon sugar on top. (I think they call it ‘pull apart pastry’). Made for a good appetizer while our orders were being prepared. Will definitely return.

Comment: Ya…went to Dierk’s once…NEVER again! The worst service EVER!! Wouldn’t know how the food is, since I never got any, thanks to the lack of service.

Comment: We’re completely obsessed with Dierks for breakfast, especially on weekdays when it’s not too packed… amazing food, and, if you can imagine it, even better staff… a slice of Santa Rosa to be proud of and to go back to over and over.

Comment: Love Hanks, Flavor and Sams 4 Play…but no one mentioned East West in Sebastapol…awesome fruit pancakes (fruit mixed in batter) and salmon benedict.

Comment: If anyone remembers the Chili Bowl on Old Redwood Hwy., the old truck stop. had the best chili in the county and went well with breafast. Well, that recipe is now at Singletree in Healdsburg!! Also in Healdsburg, Flaky Cream Donut, has a breakfast to die for and the staff treats you like royalty.-Yum!!

Comment: I agree with another poster that Howards in Occidental is hands down the best. Try the smoked salmon florentine omlet with cream cheese, tomatoes, spinach, capers, topped with holindaise. Good coffee, potatoes, but gets crowded and noisey.

Comment: Carlos’ Country Kitchen is the best place in to eat breakfast and lunch in this county! I take all of my out of town visitors there and everyone loves it! Carlos and Karen (sp?) are the best! They remember you every time and even ask about your families. And the food? Everything is SUPER fresh, filling, and just plain AWESOME! Go eat there. Now. =)

Comment: I have to say Tubby’s in Cotati! They’re always friendly, the food is always HOT and tastes great and they always keep me with a full cup! We try to go as often as we can!!

Comment: I like Redwood Cafe in Cotati. The ambience is very rustic but they have good ingredients and great coffee. Try the Redwood omelette with chicken sausage, loads of avocado and mushrooms and just enough cheese. My husband and I ate at Cafe Saint Rose on Bodega Hwy and we were very disappointed. The portions were small and there wasn’t even a basic egg and bacon/sausage on the menu. We use to eat there when it was Two Crows, which we miss. Sandra

Comment: Ah, the predictable mostly Sonoma-centric world-view of everything, including “wine county” and breakfast. How quaint and amusing! I always thought of Hank’s as a really great Denny’s, with a longer wait and higher prices, but much more socioeconomically- advantaged patrons.
Posted By: effervescent (30/06/2008 11:10:55 PM)
Comment: HOWARDS in Occidental. Hands down the best breakfast around. Everything garden fresh and delicious, fantastic wooden building, and a true west county crowd that ranges from dreadlocks to biking lycra, to Sunday dresses. A breakfast experience to repeat!

Comment: Carlos’ Country Kitchen is by far the best breakfast place in Sonoma County! You feel like you are in your families kitchen when you are in there. Carlos and Karyn (the owners) are there on a daily basis working and talking with every single person who enters. It is by far the most welcoming place around. They have practically no turnover of employees because the atmosphere is superb. I haven’t even touched on their food yet. Their food is what breakfast and lunch should be. It’s like home cookin’! When in season, a lot of their tomatoes and some veggies are straight from their home garden. They have by far the best Italian Sausage you will ever taste! I highly recommend the Italian Sausage and Cheese omlette! It is quite impressive. I have been a happy customer of theirs for years, and I put them up against anyone. -Scott

Comment: I agree that Hank’s is okay. The best breakfast for me is Willow Wood in Graton and The Garden Court Cafe in Glen Ellen is wonderful, great service and excellent food. Fresh, good quality homemade style food at both places.

Comment: The best breakfast by far is at Mini-Aker Ranch. From stuffed Crepe’s, Custom Omelettes, home made hash, french toast, country fried potatos or hash browns to the standards like steak, ham, bacon, sausage and eggs, Mini-Aker Ranch has it all. Only down side…It’s a home and not open to the public. But it is better than any of the places listed.

Comment: Not sure about the Windsor location but the food at the Railroad Square Omelette express isn’t that good. Sure, some of the frantic servers are attractive (I’ve heard it referred to as the “Breakfast Hooters” in the past)and the place is well furnished, but there are many better places in the area.
Posted By: Jack and Mark (25/06/2008 8:01:13 PM)
Comment: The Omelette Express is a 30-year-old institution on 4th Street in Railroad Square in Santa Rosa. The food is great—and has folks standing in a quick-moving line on weekends. The salads are as good as the omelettes which you can order with all whites, and any combo of ingredients you wish. The two convivial eating rooms are happy and buzzing with talk. The owner is gregarious and friendly and the waitresses are without question some of the totally nicest people who have ever walked up to a table to greet you. I hate to write this because it may add to the crowds, but the OmEx has been our breakfast/lunch of choice once or twice a week for the last ten years. We enjoy the welcoming chat with the servers and the owner. It’s our kitchen away from home.

Comment: In Petaluma, the Tea Room is great. Affordable, cozy and good! Halle’s is around the corner and good too. Mel is right – Fried plantain with Cuban style beans and eggs with the mango salsa!!!! yummy!

Comment: In Petaluma, the Tea Room is great! Halle’s is good – get the Maya eggs!

Comment: Cute that so many think “wine country” just means “Sonoma County.” IF you get a little further from your front door, you really owe it to yourself to have the best breakfast at Eggheads in Fort Bragg. There’s plenty of wine country to be had after you’ve finally had a great breakfast!
Posted By: Foodie (24/06/2008 12:16:30 PM)
Comment: Oh, yes…the Bluebird!!! Yum, Yum. But my all time favorite is Club Calpella in Calpella (a little north of Ukiah). The service is friendly but be prepared to wait for your food. Worth the wait though. All the locals know about this place. It is always packed. Walter’s Cafe in Ukiah is also the bombdizzle for breakfast and The Maple Cafe. Mmmmm…I’m hungry now!

Comment: hate to make it even more crowded for myself but I’d say Howard’s station in Occidental. Been going there for years and whenever I take a visitor there, it’s always where they want to go when they return to the area. They have an extensive menu with the old standbys, plus new specials and full on fresh fruit and vegetable juices. so weather your nursing a hangover or want to just chow down you’re covered.

Comment: The Machaca at Singletree Inn is the single best breakfast dish I’ve ever had!

Comment: At the risk of letting the cat out of the bag..Howard’s Station in Occidental is best breakfast ever. Hank’s has good benedict, but their omelette’s are very mediocre in my opion. Howard’s has a little something for everyone.
Posted By: crystal (23/06/2008 11:28:43 AM)
Comment: Although technically just over the Sonoma border in Carnaros, Boon Fly Cafe on Sonoma Highway has the best benedict I’ve ever had. Served on thick-cut home-made bread with a jalapeno hollandaise- it’s off the charts! Although the heat has been toned down over the years to please a wider variety of spice-loving palates, you can order it with extra jalapeno puree on the side and get it just the way you like it. Home-made donuts are also to die for!

Comment: Singletree Cafe in Healdsburg gets my vote. They serve a real “farmhouse” breakfast with some “gourmet” selections as well. Portions are generous, service is prompt, prices are ridiculously reasonable, staff is friendly and most important – the food is scrumptious.
    Posted By: chatnoir1 (23/06/2008 11:11:40 AM)
Comment: Arrigoni’s Cafe is downtown SR has the best French Toast and really great omelets

Comment: Thanks for the suggestions! I went with my sister to Bruno’s for brunch yesterday. What a charming place! Great service, amazing food. Really, the best biscuits and gravy I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to try it for lunch or dinner. Oh- I like Willowood in Graton, too.

Comment: I decided to try Flavors for brunch for the first time, after reading this blog. I have to say, the service was top rate – friendly, efficient, and very fast. Our waiter was on TOP of it. I was very impressed, esp after reading comments on this blog. The food was excellent, and so was the coffee (served in a french press so totally fresh). I do wish they served eggs florentine in addition to the standard eggs benedict though! Also – what is Legends@bcgc?
Posted By: Lori (22/06/2008 1:39:32 PM)
Comment: Singletree Cafe in Healdsburg is hard to beat. The food is fantastic and so is the staff. Chef Nancy has a way with beef and makes a machaca to die for! And her Hollandaise is just the best.

Comment: I concur about Brunos – it has consistently delicious food and the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had. It is a lovely spot with style. I’ve also recently had two very enjoyable breakfasts at the Colibri Grill Cafe, they have a great menu with lots of options.

Comment: Another vote for the Willow Wood in Graton. The Market Breakfast is stupid…as in good stupid.

Comment: I love Dierks, very creative and always fresh altho I don’t care for the Bisquits and Gravy, not my kind of gravy. The Double D (omlette express) rocks there omellettes and the eggs rancheros are the dieters dream. Coffee is better at Dierks! Looking forward to trying all these brought up here! Thanks for the good insight and ideas!
Posted By: Sarah (20/06/2008 9:09:15 AM)
Comment: Sam’s 4-play Cafe on Sebastopol Rd. in S.R. has the best Biscuits and Gravy–just like mom’s! The staff is super friendly, too. I just love it!

Comment: I would not go back to Dierk’s Parkside Cafe if I was paid. I was there with my disabled son and was asked to leave because he was too noisy. We were told people were complaining and leaving which did not seem likely to me since I was facing the door and did not see any exodus after my son’s one outburst.

Comment: HOWARDS. There really isn’t any question about it. I have been going since I was a small lad, and am always pleased. The Corned Beef Hash is amazing. Parkside is also a winner, as well as Willowood.
Posted By: Foodie (19/06/2008 12:29:03 PM)
Comment: Try the open faced egg sandwich for breakfast at Willowood. The Monte cristo is to die for too. In my opinion, the Omelet Express is a dunp AND I didn’t like the waitresses.

Comment: I’ve been in serch of the finest Biscuits and Gravy for over a year now. There is only one number one. Bruno’s on 4th St. Not a looks bad, taste good kind of place. This is a small looks good, taste better. From the linen napkins to the exceptional Servers this place is a prize. I hate to let everybody in on this Santa Rosa secret and perhaps lose my place in line. But I’ve got to say Ricks breakfast is the absolute best in the city or county. Only drawback is that he is only open on Sunday morning.

Comment: I think the best breakfast around is the Monte Cristo at Willowood in Graton. I also like Hallie’s and Della Fattoria in Petaluma. I wish there were better breakfast places in Santa Rosa, I’ve never taken to the quite popular Omlette Express, Hank’s Creekside or Flavors. Wish ‘Rosa had something with a little more style.

Comment: I love the omelettes at Omelette Express. I also really like their potatoes and salsa and mimosas! And I have to admit, I like their waitresses too. I also like Parkside, they have great food and they’re close to where I live. For a good diner-type breakfast also try Tubby’s in Cotati. I’ll definitely be checking out Willow Wood and I didn’t even know Arrigoni’s served breakfast, I love their lunches.

Comment: I love the parkside…we go almost every other sunday, and the place is always packed. They do a GREAT job of managing the service and seating tho, so our wait has never been more than 10 minutes…they really know how to manage a crowd. Great breakfast faves, plus interesting items on the menu for those who don’t want the usual. And, I know that its something that people have strong opinions about, but we love the coffee. Parking is iffy, but pull around the side and check out whats behind SR avenue – cool old SR neighborhood with real people preserving real houses and yards, a nice walk to and from to burn off the excellent biscuits and gravy (hope you don’t mind us parking in front of your house, locals)

Comment: I can’t eat eggs for breakfast and most of the places listed are either egg or pancakes. Fig Cafe in Glen Ellen Breakfast Pizza a winner, but I’m still looking for someplace as creative as Morning Glory in Ashland. (Ummm sweet potato hash) Always feel like I’m “perching” at Dierk’s, just too crowded.
Posted By: Elcee (18/06/2008 1:19:50 PM)
Comment: Wow! Turns out food is a lot like art. Everyone’s got an opinion. My two faves are Dierk’s & Garden Court in Glen Ellen. I’ve had great breakfasts at Dierk’s Parkside at least twice a month for the past 1 1/2 years. Great huevos rancheros, the baquette w/eggs & stuff, duck confit w/eggs, and the pull-apart coffee cakes. Yum. Service has always been hip & friendly. Garden Court’s pancakes smothered in fresh fruit or a compote are fantastic! Benedicts too! I love Willow Wood but NOT for breakfast! Flavor is good too. Hank’s is just okay.

Comment: The foremost breakfast in Sonoma county: (very good lunch too) is the Willow Wood Cafe in Graton. Experience outdoor dining in the small, winsome patio for a welcome treat. 2nd choice: Hank’s

Comment: Arrigoni’s! Best french toast anywhere, yummy omelets, and a couple of great scrambles (linguini, for one) , not to mention the opportunity to get an update on the A’s and some minor abuse from Debbie. Only downside: they are closed on Sundays.

Comment: I am still searching for the best breakfast in Sonoma County. Haven’t found it yet. I tried Parkside because their menu looked great (not just your usual bacon and eggs), but the service was HORRIBLE and the food underwhelming. Definitely would not go back there. Honestly, if I really wanted breakfast and didn’t want to make it myself, I’d make the trek to Sarafornia in Calistoga. Best breakfast around by FAR.

Comment: Of the three on your short list I’ve tried plus Hank’s I prefer Sam’s, Parkside, Piner Cafe, and particularly Howard Station by a great deal.

Comment: My vote is for Flavor. I went twice last weekend, just for their crab tostada. It is the perfect breakfast meal; filling but not too rich, slightly spicy, fresh, and delicious. Diner breakfasts can be great, but Flavor is where it’s at. Too bad the service can’t be more consistent…
