Gerard’s Paella, Santa Rosa: Opening this Wednesday, June 27, popular paella maestro Gerard Nebesky’s first brick and mortar will serve up his signature rice dish along with Spanish tapas, sandwiches and salads. We got a sneak peek at some of the dishes, including the El Paquito bocadillo, a baguette-style sandwich with Serrano ham, Manchego cheese and arugula, and the El Pescador, a black paella with clams, mussels, prawns, sweet peas, peppers and aioli. Want to try the dish that beat celebrity chef Bobby Flay’s on the Food Network? The El Valdeon ($15) includes prawns, squid, mussels, marinated chicken, also known as the “Flay Slayer." Parish, Santa Rosa: A love letter to owner Rob Lippincott's hometown of New Orleans, the second Parish Cafe has already woven itself into the fabric of downtown Santa Rosa. Flanked by flickering New Orleans-style gas lamps and perfumed by the spicy bouquet of crawfish and hush puppies, The Parish Cafe is warmer than a peach cobbler resting on maw-maw's window sill. Mod Pizza, Santa Rosa: The newest entry into the DIY pizza game in Santa Rosa is Seattle-based MOD Pizza, offering up tasty ingredients like arugula, roasted red peppers and corn, fresh rosemary, fresh ricotta and fig balsamic glaze for your pie. You can, of course, also get things like pepperoni and mozzarella, but where’s the fun in that? Old Possum Brewing, Santa Rosa: Chef and butcher Christian Velasquez makes his own thick-cut bologna, lightly fried, served atop sliced artisan white bread with homemade pickles and his own pimento cheese, and here it’s a revelation rather than a punchline. Habit Burger, Santa Rosa: Much-awaited charbroiled burger chain comes north with double charburger, portobello burger, malted milkshakes and even a seared ahi tuna sandwich that’s a welcome addition to the fast food lineup. Is it an In-N-Out killer? Probably not, though they’re located (not by accident) close by.
