Doc Holliday’s Angus Burger

A solid contender in an unlikely spot.

Exceeding expectations: The Angus Burger
Exceeding expectations: The Angus Burger

Sometimes a great burger strikes where you least expect it. Like at a bar in the middle of the afternoon.

Doc Holliday’s, which took over as a nightclub/karaoke/music venue from the venerable Rita’s last year, is doing a really solid Angus burger cooked to order for $8.95.  Unlikely? Maybe. But like the Sweet Spot (in downtown Santa Rosa), Sprenger’s Tap Room and O’Connors, bar kitchens sometimes sometimes have an instinct for simple, satisfying burgers and fried deliciousness. Served up on a hefty pretzel bun with fries or cole slaw, it’s a heck of a protein foundation for a long night of carousing. Or a long afternoon of spreadsheets. And unlike a lot of other burger spots that only believe in serving meat that’s been charred into submission, our “medium” order was exactly that. Medium. Pink in the middle and juicy. The one gripe: Don’t charge $1 extra for cheese. I hate that.

Also tasty: The Wedge, a steakhouse classic, is a quarter head of iceberg lettuce slathered with blue cheese dressing, bacon and diced tomatoes. You might be surprised at how refreshing the snap of ice cold ‘berg can actually be, and a bit more economical than all those fancy-pants greens ($5.95). Spicy chicken breast sandwich with chipotle spread, fried onion strings, Jack cheese on a French Roll ($10.95).

Open for lunch and dinner daily, plus a bar bites menu in the lounge. 138 Calistoga Road, Santa Rosa, 537-0308. The restaurant portion of Doc Holliday’s is child-friendly in the evening, and even has a family karaoke on Wednesday nights from 5-8pm.

  1. I went there two nights ago and I got food poisoning. Guess you all got lucky. Watch out. The service is horrible as well. Sat ten minutes before someone said hi or brought a menu. Won’t be back.

  3. I went to Doc Hollidays tonight with two 6 year olds in tow, ready for a great night out for family karaoke but was told it’s on Tuesdays, not Wednesdays. Two sad little 6 year olds, all dressed up for nothing. 🙁

  7. my wife and went to dinner there last week. I was hesitant because we had been there in January and food was lack luster. The waitress said they had a new chef since then. I tried the Smokehouse special, and let me tell you; by far the BEST BBQ I’ve had this side of the Mississippi! We will be back. Good job Doc’s

  8. I went there recently too, definitely concerned that it might be a bad experience, and I was stunned. My food looked exactly like the dishes above. The atmosphere is what it is – a bar during the day, which is never a beautiful place to be, but as for the food, it was very tasty. I hope they keep it up.

  11. Maybe they hired a new chef? That looks tasty. Maybe Heather can find out. I’m getting hungry just looking at that pic!

  13. Sally, I’m with you. We’ve tried doc hollidays twice in the last year, wiht a few months apart. Both times the service, from the time you walk in the door and no one even looks at you to ask hey you want food, to the waitress seeming like we were annoying us with her questions, was not good. I don’t remember the food, but I do remember that the burger didnt look like that! I’ll give them another shot!

  15. That certainly doesn’t look like the burger I had at Doc Holliday’s! I was not impressed with the food, service or decor. Hopefully they are making some improvements.
