Just in: Restaurateurs Jeff and Susan Mall of the longtime Healdsburg restaurant Zin are closing. The restaurant recently celebrated its 15th anniversary and has won countless awards for its unique Southern twists on Wine Country cuisine.

Here is the email that went out:

Dear family, friends and members of the Healdsburg community,

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that after 15 years we say goodbye. Due to circumstances beyond our control, Zin is permanently closing its doors on December 30, 2014.

We owe our success to the talent of our loyal employees, our customers’ kind patronage, the support of our town’s community network, and the unshakeable support of our friends and family.

The spirit of Zin will live on with local chef Dustin Valette (currently of Dry Creek Kitchen) taking over ownership of the restaurant and building. The restaurant will undergo a name change, minor renovations and will re-open in early 2015.

Your support over the years has meant the world to us. Please come see us over the next few weeks; the staff will be happy to see you, the kitchen will be cooking its heart out, and we’ll make these last meals together really count.

With fond regards,

Jeff & Susan Mall

Chef Dustin Vallette of Dry Creek Kitchen will be taking over the restaurant space.

  1. When Zin opened in Healdsburg, the other choices were Madrona, Ralph’s ,CK’s or the Western Boot! Now there’s 50+ restaurants sardined into that town….even sushi,

  2. We all have our own memories of this restaurant. John was simply commenting on his particular experience. Whether positive or negative, it is worthy of a post here. Not all can be glowing. Like a eulogy, lets not canonize this establishment. Next….

  3. As newcomers to Healdsburg you have always made us welcome. We will never forget the lovely basket of goodies Susan gave us when we dined at Zin’s, fresh off a long flight in from the east coast. Leah has always been there to greet us and make us feel as honored guests. You will be dearly missed. We hope that while this door is closing, another one will open for you. Thankfully, we will be back in town before you close, so we can give you a proper goodbye. Best of luck.

  4. I just want to thank Jeff and Susan for making us look good when we first opened the hotel and started referring our guests to them. Everyone commented about the great food and service, and we all still do. I am sad to see them close this chapter, but I happy they set the bar high in the Sonoma County restaurant industry. Continued success to their future endeavors. They both are truly humble stewards of the industry.

  5. My family owned the bakery that was there before Zin. I have always had a soft spot for that building and remember sneaking around eating cookies and watching my Dad decorate beautiful cakes. Thank you Jeff for all you did for that place.

  6. I don’t know many folks that work as hard as Jeff and Susan. True contributors to our local food scene. Jeff, thanks for always sharing your space and resources, we will miss Zin.

  7. This is devastating. Years ago, I worked with/for Jeff and Susan on their farm and at some catering events. The love that was put into their food and management of their companies was astounding. They are honestly some of the best people you’ll ever meet. I’m so sad about this and will make a point to go more than once before the restaurant closes. Jeff and Susan, I wish you both the very best in the future, and hope to see you around Sonoma County soon.

      1. Zin:

        First-Rate People
        that will be missed !
Thanks and Best Wishes to the whole Team there…
