Mike and Kendra McCoy are returning to the cafe and catering company they sold last spring. The couple have been asked to bring their longtime expertise back to the business after a reorganization of the company now owned by Chef Josef Keller and wife, Jill Keller-Peters.
“Recent months have proved to be disappointing and it is thought that their experience will help to improve the future business. [We] will be evaluating the present circumstances and making some constructive changes where appropriate,”said Kendra McCoy.
Locations at Fourth Street and on Mendocino Avenue remain open for business. The company will no longer operate a cafe at Kaiser Permanente. “We hope all customers, new and old, will visit us soon,” said McCoy.
Keller purchased the business from the McCoy’s last winter, after a overhauling the county’s Meals on Wheels food program. He shuttered his longtime restaurant, Josef’s in 2010. The Kellers are currently maintaining ownership.
“We needed to step back and are looking for new opportunities in our lives,” said Keller.
Well Done….!

I would like to make a suggestion, Mr. Keller does not have a great reputation with those who have worked in the industry (most of us are from small but observant positions in the restaurant business so we mainly remain silent). He really needs to have a supervisor making sure the customer isn’t forgotten in his reach for fame and fortune. I’m glad to hear that the McCoy family is back in the picture.

I am surprised at the comments stating they are disappointed. I have had the opposite experience, we had a graduation luncheon and I ordered 3 trays of sandwiches which they quartered to make serving easier. They were fantastic and Pearson’s even came in on a Sunday (which they are closed) to make them fresh for me!! Also I was in yesterday and they were extremely helpful and food was great! . I also learned they will serve the sandwiches on Gluten free bread at no extra charge. I have been going to Pearson’s since the original family first brought it to SR I hope people will give them another chance as they are a great local choice. I went to BJ’s last night and just solidified why I will always go local. The food was awful…

Glad to hear improvements are on the way. I have visited the Fourth st location twice now and have been disappointed in the lack of a pleasant atmosphere and customer service. The cashier seemed put-off that I asked for a napkin for the pastry I purchased to take on the road.
Well I am happy to hear this, because I stopped in Pearson’s last weekend for about the fifth time since the sale and based on the same poor service I’d gotten the first four times, decided I wasn’t going to shop there anymore.
The food quality seems uneven although good/better in some cases, but the service and customer experience has really declined. Each time I’ve been in, I’ve had to wait quite a while to get the staff’s attention, even though there were no customers ahead of me. Last weekend, two workers were taking quietly in the corner of the counters with their backs to the room. They had no idea customers were waiting.
And the arrangement of the food in cases is very odd and not particularly helpful to decision-making. Several of the entrees aren’t labeled except to say “See specials board for info” so you have to walk 10 feet over to the blackboard to find out what the chicken is. And then you go back and realize you want to know about the beef, so back you go to read about that. If you ask the staff what the dishes are, they don’t know.
All I wanted this last trip was to buy some of the fantastic caesar salad dressing but there was none in the case. When I asked if they had any, the server said she’d check and then disappeared in back for at least five minutes. When she came back she said, yes we have it but it will take some time to get it for you. What was she doing back there for 5 min? Then there was another long wait, and then when she tried to ring it up she didn’t know how to work the register.
So I am happy the McCoys are back if only to get the place in shape. I’d like to see it continue as a successful local business, but it’s really been difficult to patronize it lately.
I’ll give it another chance!
I have to say that i agree with you that the food is not the same …when the mccoys were running their business with pearson and company….they were the best..the food was good and i am sorry they are not going to be at kaiser..
the prices are pricey since the new owners took it over…that is why i dont go there no more

Interesting, Captain. It would seem logical that the KP location should be a gold mine. It would appear to be not so. Fascinating…
I had lunch today at the fourth st.. location and noticed that the meatloaf sandwich was not quite up to the old superior standard. I want my old Pearson’s back!

Great news! Quality had definitely gone down hill after the sale. I’ll be back 🙂

what about the Pearson location at JDSU?
Operation of the JDSU cafe has been taken over by Mangia, a partnership of Brian McCoy and Patty Rohrer. Both worked many years at Pearson & Co and are very excited about owning and running their own small business.
