Shige Sushi in Cotati isย a bento-box sized sushi bar with just 22 seats, including the bar.
But the Japanese owners have cracked the code on affordable, yet luxe Japanese favorites with authentic karaage (fried chicken), spicy poke salad, top-notch nigiri and sashimi and a laundry list of rolls (including plenty of gaijin-style mayonnaise/fried rolls).
For the price, its the best sushi I’ve had in years. Clearly others agree, because it a popular neighborhood gathering spot where chatting with the table next to you is not only polite, but expected.
Open for lunch and dinner, but not all entrees are available for lunch and the sushi bar can sometimes be out of specialty products like tamago or uni. For dessert, matcha mousse is anything but mousse-like, but its firm consistency and earthy green tea flavor make it worth ordering.
Open Tuesday through Friday, closed Monday. 8235 Old Redwood Hwy, Cotati, shige-sushi.com.
We try to eat here once a week. I’m not a big sushi fan, but I love the Shige chicken and pork selections and teriyaki dishes. ALWAYS get the miso soup! My wife does the sushi and is always pleasantly satisfied. Would you believe I could never get the hang of chopsticks until we started eating here!
And try the sake’, I’m working my way down the list and having a delightful time! The unfiltered is the best.

I went there last night and had a wonderful time. The sushi was the best I’ve had yet in Sonoma County. That’s counting Gary Chu’s place and many others. We were seated quickly and the service was great. I had the Crazy Horse Roll, the karaage appetizer and she had the spicy tuna roll plus some kani and hamachi. All excellent and the green tea was perfect. $36 is a great price for the meal. I’ll be back ๐

Went to Shige’s the other day with my wife. The atmosphere is great, the service and presentation are wonderful, the sushi is OK. I think Shige is still years away from mastering Sushi. The fish needs to be fresher, and the cuts crisper, and the pieces smaller. It should be small enough to grab the sushi, dip it into soy sauce, then put it whole in your mouth. That said, I’ll go back because the price is good, and I want to try out something other than sushi next time.

Went there Saturday night, the sushi was wonderful, and the presentation even more wonderful. The help was delightful as well as the atmosphere. The music selection was fantastic. We really enjoyed our evening. The best Japanese food I have had scene I returned from Tokyo.

Looks wonderful! Any more info on hours? Their website doesn’t say anything. They’re closed on weekends?

Interesting, Captain. An improvement over Nagomi, apparently. Cotati needs something better than Brixx and Little New Yorker.

Went there Friday night. Great food, atmosphere and a friendly staff. I will second the karaage (ask for the dipping sauce) and spicy poke salad.
