Sitting outside her tree-ringed home pottery studio in Santa Rosa, Hannah Allen recalls the exact moment the life she’s now made for herself began to take shape. The Sonoma County native and owner of Olivet Ceramics was tending bar at State Bird Provisions in San Francisco when a customer off-handedly mentioned Heath Ceramics, the esteemed tableware maker founded in Sausalito nearly 80 years ago.

“She was like, ‘I’m the plateware representative. I fly around and talk to chefs about their plateware needs.’ I was like, ‘That’s a job? Oh my God,’” says Allen, who is clad in the clay-stained Carhartt overalls she typically wears on days spent at her pottery wheel. “So that was the first seed.”

Allen and Healdsburg’s Jee Park both craft ceramic pieces for some of the finest restaurants in Sonoma County and beyond, yet these two artists followed wildly different paths toward taking their place at those acclaimed tables.

A longtime restaurant veteran, Allen began crafting her own pieces when she was laid off during Covid, and she started taking classes at Clayfolk, a studio an old friend had opened in Occidental.

“I was wrestling clay off the wheel. It was falling off, it was messy, it was ugly, I had a mask on—it was terrible,” she says, laughing. “I just decided that this was going to be my meditation, because I needed a break from real life. In Occidental, I didn’t get any [cell] service, and I was like, ‘This is good for me to have this quiet time.’ And all of a sudden, that’s where I was spending all of my time. I could not get away.”

In 2021, she took a job at SingleThread, where she still works as rooftop captain, leading the service team on the roof deck. Looking at and handling the three-Michelin-starred restaurant’s plateware on a daily basis proved inspirational, and she often brought her own pieces in to give to co-workers.

“At SingleThread, there’s the principle of kaizen—one good change every day to make improvements,” she says. “Being surrounded by that principle while creating art, I was like, if I can just kaizen every day and kaizen each piece, I can keep doing this.”

A crackle vase made by Hannah Allen in Santa Rosa on Monday, March 23, 2026. (Christopher Chung / The Press Democrat)

Keep on she did, firing and glazing clay mugs, plates, vases, and more in a variety of earth tones, each piece with a tactile, slightly imperfect, wabi-sabi feel. When SingleThread’s owners briefly partnered in the opening of Little Saint in 2022, co-owner Katina Connaughton asked Allen to make vases for the flower program. Around the same time, Melissa McGaughey, who co-owns Quail & Condor and Troubadour Bread & Bistro and uses Allen’s plateware at the restaurants, offered to sell her pieces at Quail & Condor. “She gave me two shelves, and it was gone, just like that,” Allen says.

“Hannah has a unique style,” McGaughey explains. “There’s a feminine feel to it—a softness to the bold colors and weight to the shape. Hannah’s ceramics [at the restaurants] are from a color palette based on a Turkish rug, to showcase our influence from my Turkish heritage. The food has a more complete story when paired with plateware that reflects the founders.”

McGaughey also notes the simplicity of those pieces for everyday use. Functionality is a key consideration for Allen, an approach gleaned from her years of restaurant work.

“As a service industry professional,” Allen says, “I’m like, ‘Are you ready for the high volume that’s going to be put on these plates? Here’s what I think we should do if you’re going to be passing them to people. Here’s what’s going to be easiest to clear.’ I’m always advocating for the ease of it.”

Jee Park also emphasizes practicality when making ceramics, although her style is distinct from Allen’s, and her career path even more circuitous. The proprietor of Healdsburg’s Seoul Sister Studio immigrated to the U.S. at age 4, growing up in the Chicago area in what she calls “a pretty stereotypical kind of Korean family, where academics were really important.”

Park obliged, earning a degree in mechanical engineering from MIT. She confesses she didn’t much like engineering, so she became a high school math teacher, first in New Jersey and then San Francisco. Later, she went to graduate school at Stanford, which led to her becoming an interaction designer at Yahoo in the early 2000s. Her love for ceramics bloomed in part due to a phenomenon many Bay Area residents can relate to—rush-hour traffic.

“I was living in the Haight, driving down to Sunnyvale, which is a bear,” recalls Park, sitting on a couch with her dog in her expansive warehouse studio in downtown Healdsburg. “In order to break up the commute on the way home—and, I think, in response to me making digital things that weren’t physical—I stopped at the Palo Alto Art Center to take classes. That’s how I started ceramics, and I just completely fell in love with it.”

While Park enjoyed the tactile aspect of the art form, she also found a synergy between ceramics and the user interface work she did in the software world.

“I love to solve problems,” she says. “You think about restaurants—especially in San Francisco—their kitchens are fairly small, and you’ve got to think about the footprint of the piece, and about whether they’re going to be handwashed or if they’re going to be dishwasher-safe. I don’t just think, ‘Oh, it’s beautiful’; it’s got to actually work, too.”

Park’s work may be functional, but it’s not simple. She is inspired by architecture, citing the free-flowing structures of Gaudí and Gehry, an influence that can be seen in pedestals she designed for Dry Creek Kitchen. Many of her pieces feature intricate hand-carved lines, including a set of textured bowls she created for Petaluma’s Table Culture Provisions that can be flipped over to be used as platforms.

“I really like to make my pieces multifunctional,” she says. “So you get more bang for your buck.”

Years before she moved to Healdsburg in 2021, Park and her sister brought their mother to Wine Country for her 70th birthday, where they dined at Dry Creek Kitchen and Cyrus, both of which are now clients. “They are just so important,” she says, “because they’re part of my origin story.”

“I feel like it elevates what we’re doing, and it’s a conversation starter,” Shane McAnelly, executive chef of Dry Creek Kitchen, says of Park’s work. “We have little cards one of our managers made that talk about Jee’s background, so when people ask about it—which happens with relative frequency—we can bring those out and plug her.”

While her local ties have proved fruitful, a farther-flung place also lingers in Park’s consciousness. She named her studio Seoul Sister in part to recognize her Korean heritage, and she cites “Irworobongdo,” a screen painted with a landscape of mountains, sky, and water traditionally placed behind the royal throne in Korea, as a touchstone.

“The Korean people are supposed to be like the water in that painting, where you overcome the obstacles,” she says. “Nothing stops water, right? And it may not [take] a direct path, which my life has definitely not been a direct path.”

Water flowing over and around rocks, rarely taking a straight line, but always winding to its inevitable destination—it’s a description that fits not only Park’s journey, but also Allen’s, and perhaps the entire discipline of ceramics.

“When I got started,” Allen remembers, “and pieces weren’t coming out the way I wanted, I often would tell myself, ‘Well, the clay’s going to tell me what it wants to be today.’ And that was it.”

A modern Sonoma estate with poetic, understated style on 37 acres of rolling hills and vineyards is currently listed for sale. Owned by the estate of CD-multimedia pioneer Robert Ellis, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home is seeking $7,695,000. A portion of the sale proceeds will benefit the late entrepreneur’s beloved organizations: Opera Parallèle, the San Francisco Symphony and the UC Berkeley Foundation for Cal Performances.

The work of Mahoney & Piechota Architects, the 4,200-square-foot dwelling offers a seamless indoor-outdoor experience via floor-to-ceiling sliding windows and a wraparound deck. But the interplay between the design and setting strikes an alchemy beyond that.

The home’s angular design whispers with clean lines and subtle tones. The look is made sumptuous with juxtaposing curvy hills and vineyard rows, visible from nearly every room — even the walk-in closet. Similarly, a flood of red flowers dazzle in the courtyard against a tranquil backdrop of wood-siding and walls of glass windows, gently framed in black steel. From inside the house, the show of red beams against seasonally green hills in the distance. The landscaping, by Tammara Norman, includes a surround of lush shrubbery.

A home with a powerful history is currently listed for sale in Cloverdale. Built in 1903 as a steam-generating power plant, the structure was converted into a residence by the 1950s. The “Power House” — named by former owner Arthur Foster, a banker and Northwest Pacific Railroad scion — is currently seeking $3,750,000.

The stucco dwelling, which once converted Big Sulphur Creek water into power for three towns and the Italian Swiss Colony, still bears the words “No Admittance. Danger.” No danger remains, but Big Sulphur Creek does, which runs that length of the property, adding scenic and acoustic beauty, not to mention a nod to the home’s history.

The home has three en-suite bedrooms, a 40-foot-by-40-foot great room with 20-foot ceilings, a herringbone-brick faced hearth, and custom windows that overlook the creek.

A well-preserved, traditional home with an accessory dwelling unit is currently listed in Petaluma. Stately with four bedrooms, four bathrooms and 2,801 square feet of living space, the home’s asking price is $3,349,000.

Located on Petaluma’s well-known D Street, among homes from the 19th to the early 20th century, this renovated, circa-1920s dwelling boasts signature elements of traditional architecture: a hipped roof, a brick facade and heavily ornamented pediments. Meticulous landscaping, a fleur-de-lis gated entry and 10-foot ceilings add to the home’s grandness.

Ornate interior details are in pristine condition and brightened with white paint, new fixtures and hints of color in curtains, furnishings and wallpaper — all decidedly traditional. Antique style remains but with a good-as-new crispness.

The Napa Valley ranch of celebrated San Francisco designer Ken Fulk and his husband Kurt Wootton is currently listed for sale. Just 15 minutes from downtown St. Helena, the Durham Ranch spans 76 rolling acres. Once a horse ranch, the property now includes an entertainment barn, a two-bedroom and two-bathroom cottage, two tent-bungalows, a “Cowboy Shack” and a pool. The asking price is $4.5 million.

Oaks draped in lace lichen, a natural spring and rocky streams grace the property. Unique to the Napa ranch is Fulk’s inspired design — rooted in the setting’s history, yet modern and beautiful with witty details.

“The one thing we were certain of when we began was that we did not want to lose the initial feeling that had drawn us to the place,” said Fulk, whose design ethos has been described as cinematic, theatrical and maximalist. “Nothing fancy, no faux Tuscan retreat or Provençal villa. The inspiration in restoring the property was to pay tribute to the classic California ranch with everything white and stark against the ever-changing backdrop.”

(Douglas Friedman)

With a modern approach, Fulk created cohesion between several distinctly styled buildings: the entertainment barn, with plans by George Bevan (of Sonoma’s Bevan & Associates) to one day become the main home; the year-round tents, which have become a guest favorite; the Cowboy Shack, originally built as an art installation and now serving as an entertainment space; and the 1940s cottage, which had to be completely rebuilt.

The ranch character starts on the cottage’s board-and-batten interior walls and blue limestone floors. 1920s Parisian lighting fixtures offer a bit of time travel, and there’s a pleasing mix of textiles, from ticking to buffalo check to zebra print. Reclaimed materials lend an authentic rustic-ness — the property’s original fence was repurposed into hyper-distressed cabinetry — and also a stylish absurdity — tractor springs are born again as corkscrew-looking barstool bases.

A bright and barn-y red is dragged throughout the property in small but inspired touches, from the door that shouts against the barn’s all-white exterior to the metal chairs, vintage ice cooler and puppy-forward artwork. In fact, each room in the cottage appears to have at least one picture featuring a dog.

Canine companions inspired the property’s beginnings. Fulk and Wootton named the ranch after their late golden retriever, Durham, who Fulk described as “the noblest creature I have ever known, man or beast.” The bluestone flooring was chosen for durability and to keep the dogs cool. The 45-foot pool was built for the dogs to play in. Thankfully, it’s good for humans, too, with a 2-foot bench that runs its length.

While the dwellings have a rich, collected look on the inside, the exteriors are striking for their clean lines and simple geometry.

The 3,200-square-foot entertainment barn has a simple longhouse structure with a steeply pitched roof. Outside, a repeat of loungers, umbrellas and branded life preservers line one side of the pool. A group of white planters, with groomed spherical plants, stand in formation on the patio. In the middle of the grass is a simple row of Adirondacks. The disciplined layout on the land, enclosed by a swirling line of farm fence, creates a crisp, quiet and energized scene — not unlike a modern landscape painting.

Fulk — who has designed spaces for fashion designers, tech executives and even Kamala Harris — veers away from Wine Country design trends while maintaining a strong sense of the setting.

A secluded Russian River home and accessory dwelling unit (ADU) are currently listed for sale. Set on nearly a full, level acre, the 2,828-square-foot property with four bedrooms and four bathrooms is listed for $1,995,000.

The renovated 1940s-era, ranch-style home has a floor plan with an open flow between the kitchen, living room and the large outdoor patio. The home’s handsome gray exterior is accented with black shutters and white trim. Black accents are carried throughout the dwelling — in the kitchen cabinets and backsplash, in the various fixtures, and in the repeat of umbrellas that double down on the spa-like feel of the backyard.

The sunny yard is focused around a large, saltwater pool with an integrated spa, but the grounds have an impressive collection of zones tailored to enjoyment: patios, lawns, a fire pit, a bocce ball court and a hobby vineyard. A surround of trees adds another layer of lushness.

A reimagined circa-1924 home in the Burbank Gardens neighborhood of Santa Rosa is currently listed for $685,000.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom dwelling exudes charm right at the curb. The walkway flanked by grass leads to a spacious front porch. Modern fixtures and fresh paint highlight the traditional millwork.

A down-to-the-studs renovation has given a pleasing transitional style to the antique home. Oak floors provide a clean and warm look, white walls offer airiness, and black iron fixtures button up the look with a bit of contrast.

It’s a house devoted to family life and art—the two things most dear to the hearts of Jake and Corrin Messing.

Their vintage 1918 two-story home, within walking distance of the Healdsburg Plaza, was reimagined to comfortably accommodate three young children. The space hums with the kids’ noise and is deeply personal, filled with cherished objects found in nature, treasured art, travel souvenirs, and furniture Jake made himself. As Corrin puts it, “It’s a well-worn, well-loved space. With kids, nothing is too precious.”

A decade ago, the couple left burgeoning artistic careers in New York City to embrace a slower life in Jake’s native Healdsburg—a far cry from bustling Brooklyn, where they had been living with their firstborn, Goldie, now 10.

Jake grew up on 170 acres in the hills west of Dry Creek Valley, a property christened Deergnaw by his parents, Russ Messing and Arlene Naschke. Former Haight-Ashbury hippies, they moved to Sonoma County during the back-to-the-land movement of the 1970s and are now well known locally for the award-winning olive oil they sell at the Healdsburg Farmers Market.

Jake’s childhood was rustic and idyllic. The family cabin lacked electricity until he was 4. He spent his days exploring the property’s forests of madrone, oak, and redwood, along with its gardens and large pond.

Although he was drawn to New York to attend the Parsons School of Design, by his early 30s, he felt ready to leave city life behind and raise his children with the same connection to nature he had enjoyed. At the time, Jake had an established career in high-end corporate design, illustration, and merchandising for companies like Harry Winston, Bergdorf Goodman, and Tiffany & Co. Corrin, who grew up in upstate New York, also was a successful designer specializing in branding, styling, and event design.

“We were excited to make the move,” Corrin says. “We were feeling a little burnt out. So we made a conscious decision to leave. It’s nice to have more space, and to have the quiet.”

After searching the county, the couple chose an early-20th-century cottage in town rather than a rural retreat. The children would still have Deergnaw to roam, but daily life could unfold on foot—walks to shops, restaurants, and the park. The house also included a backyard for playing and an accessory unit for Jake’s studio as he transitioned to more fine art and commissioned pieces. They weren’t keen on the old kidney shaped pool, but it has since become a summer hub for the family, now expanded to include Dia, 7, and Leo, 2 ½.

Although the house came with preapproved remodeling plans and original features they hoped to preserve, such as a brick fireplace, built-in cabinets with leaded glass doors, and coffered ceilings, once renovations were underway they discovered extensive fire and water damage behind the walls, forcing a full interior gut. They did salvage a claw-foot tub, which now anchors the upstairs children’s bathroom, part of a 1,000-square-foot addition with three bathrooms.

Art is everywhere: children’s drawings, family photographs, paintings, and posters. A recurring motif is hands, including casts of their babies’ hands, and a prized drawing by illustrator Ben Shahn depicting an artist’s hand holding a stylus. “Hands tell such a story about a person,” Jake says. “And for me, being someone who is creative and works with my hands, they’re my tool. The human experience is so tactile. It’s how we create everything in the world. I think there’s power to that.”

The couple carved out a cozy music room and library filled with instruments, travel books, and a vintage stereo and turntable, complete with classic rock and jazz vinyl records. Jake built the dining room table from reclaimed beams salvaged in Brooklyn and repurposed legs from a sewing factory. Driftwood collected on their honeymoon in Maine became a console table.

The heart of the home is the kitchen, where family life and socializing center around a 5-by-6-foot soapstone island. French doors open to the backyard, where swings hang from a tree the kids call “Maple” and a playhouse Jake built anchors the lawn. One wall of built-in cabinets serves as a gallery of objects and art gathered over time and through travel. Corrin’s favorite is a brass brooch handmade in the Peruvian Andes.

With backgrounds in styling and visual design, the couple has an eye for arrangement: Every surface feels intentional. “We find beauty in things that are just normal or found… that may not be precious to other people,” says Corrin. “If we display it in the right spot, it takes on a different meaning.”

Corrin still does small art projects for friends, but now works as a group facilitator and prevention specialist at Verity, a Santa Rosa-based nonprofit serving incarcerated youth at Sonoma County Juvenile Hall. She has also collaborated with Healdsburg chefs Ari Rosen and Jorge Flores to develop a culinary skills program at the facility, which will offer paid restaurant work to selected students.

Jake remains focused on his art, drawing inspiration from the natural world just as he did when tramping the local fields and forests in his youth. From his backyard studio—sometimes shared with his children—he often works in the vanitas tradition of the Dutch masters, who explored themes of transience through objects such as wilted flowers, an hourglass, or skulls.

His work can be seen locally, including in an upcoming show at Paul Mahder Gallery in August and in the stairwell of Harmon Guest House, where a mural he calls “Blue Harmon” depicts butterflies and a magnificent blue heron, one of his favorite birds in the local landscape. “There is something about their length and power,” Jake says of the birds. “It always feels like a blessing to see one.”

Like many longtime residents of a town turned world-class destination, he feels a sense of push and pull.

“It’s not what it used to be, and part of me wants to hold on to that,” he says. “But I love that it’s such a beautiful place to live and raise kids. After 14 years in New York, I always knew I was coming back here at some point. It’s such a deep part of who I am—and my soul and spirit.” jakemessing.com

The 47th annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase — a design event and home tour that invites several top Bay Area designers to transform an exceptional home in the city — will be open to the public from April 25 through May 25. Several Sonoma County design professionals participated in this year’s showcase, offering fine art inspiration and expert in-home design to thousands of visitors.

The site of this year’s home tour, which raises funds for the San Francisco University High School financial aid program, is an 1897 Queen Anne Victorian in Pacific Heights, designed by architect Moses J. Lyon.

San Francisco design firm Maker & Moss transformed a diminutive space into a study inspired by what a 19th-century traveler might collect. The A-frame room is covered in a rosy Oonsai wallpaper with vintage imagery; draped with gauzy, grid-pattern curtains; and lined with low-profile, built-in bookshelves. A cadmium-yellow chaise lounge provides a playful if not showstopping counterpoint to the scheme.

A modern painting by Petaluma abstract artist Lisa Lightman served as inspiration in the design. The yellow in Lightman’s piece “Highway 101 in The Morning” was a natural match for the punchy-colored chair, according to principal Maker & Moss designer Briana Tunison, who worked on the room with the firm’s founder, Matt Bissinger. Several of Lightman’s pieces are placed throughout the space.

A bathroom designed by San Francisco firm AubreyMaxwell, and built by Perez Construction, features linear ochre tiles — handmade by Healdsburg-based McIntyre Tile — in the shower and on the vanity surrounding the mirror, which is punctuated by lantern-like fabric sconces. The richly clean look is contrasted with smoky colored floor and trim terrazzo tiles by Sonoma Tilemakers.

Alexander Nikban of Studio Alexander handpicked a variety of McIntyre tiles to give dimension and color to a “moody” shower and bathroom that, he said, “overlooks the greatest view in the world.”

Cranes and willow branches on House of Hackney wallpaper inspired Sonoma Interiors’ “Birds of a Feather” bedroom and en suite bathroom. Principal designer Andrea Halkovich tapped Healdsburg-based Sandra Jordan Prima Alpaca for drapery with lines of feather-like fringe. The cream-colored curtains — hanging from Tuell & Reynolds bronze curtain rods — give a playful and airy quality to the weighty ornamentation of Victorian millwork and the carob-colored wallpaper.

The Cloverdale-based, fine art-furnishings firm Tuell & Reynolds also lent their modern fire grate and other fireplace accessories to the hearth, which Halkovich had refaced in a clean-lined Tadelakt, creating another light and modern counterpoint to the rich aesthetic.

Halkovich credits the team of generous and talented collaborators for the outcome of the room, including Aguilar Stone’s expert installation of an arched marble shower entrance; contractor Dominic Dotto’s dedication to the design; and Sonoma designer and Halkovich’s high school friend, Heather Kearsley Wolf, who provided a linen bedcover in a quiet beige. The experience wraps up with a Wine Country Chocolates truffle that Halkovich hands out to visitors — a sweet, sumptuous finish that recalls the richness of the room.

Fernando Castellanos of Castellanos Interiors designed the “Red Bedroom” and “Red Dressing Room.” Although boldly accented, the “Red Bedroom” is decidedly tranquil with cream-colored walls and grand-but-airy sculpted glass chandeliers by Berkeley artist Cliff Hersh. The design’s red palette is influenced by views of the Golden Gate Bridge through the room’s turret windows.

Red Sandra Jordan alpaca curtains, shimmery brick McIntryre tile on the dressing-room plinths, and high-gloss red paint in the entryway and cocktail room bring unabashed color that counterbalances the dramatic Rosso Venezia marble fireplace, sourced by showcase sponsor Da Vinci Marble. The look is complemented with artful greenery from House of Botanicals in Santa Rosa. Dramatically shaped trees and succulents sit in concrete hourglass and half-dome vessels, relics of 1960s Europe, that are the work of late Swiss furniture designer Willy Guhl.
