A two-bedroom cottage on a tree-wrapped half-acre perched above the Mendocino coastline is currently listed for sale. The renovated 1960s dwelling is priced at $875,000 and was recently spotlighted in The New York Times.

The home has an airiness beyond its 1,000 square feet thanks to numerous windows. Reclaimed wood-plank floors give the space a rustic warmth.

A generously sized wraparound deck and sunken spa set the stage for taking in the tranquil setting. An indoor-outdoor sound system adds another sensory layer to the experience.

This expansive coastal region can feel like a faraway world, since the narrow, winding Highway 128 running from Cloverdale to the region’s primary entry point of Boonville demands that you drive so slowly. But really, it’s at most a two-hour drive from even the furthest point in Sonoma County.

Once here, weekenders will find a wonderland of 90-plus wineries to discover, award winning farm-to-table fare in even the tiniest towns, and 90 miles of stunning Pacific coastline — all steeped in an easygoing vibe that truly feels like getting away from it all.

Founded in 1967 by Tony and Gretchen Husch and now the oldest winery in the Anderson Valley, the centerpiece of the 60-acre property is a charming, historic tasting room that used to be a pony barn. Capped with bright, flowering vines, the weathered structure has hobbit house qualities, if hobbits made fine wine, including Chenin Blanc, Ancient Vines Zinfandel, and Gewürztraminer. Now owned by the Oswald family, the winery has been modernized and expanded, but the vibe remains rustic and romantic, so keep your phone at the ready to snap Instagrammable delights like the seasonal sheep who mow — and fertilize — the vineyards. Wine prices make this an affordable choice to stock the cellar, with many around $20 to $30 — and be sure to ask about the free tastings. 4400 Hwy. 128, Philo. 800-554-8724, huschvineyards.com

Bee Hunter Wine

Boonville has its own “Boontling” language dating back to the 1890s, when the town was an isolated farming, ranching, and logging community. The vernacular nearly went extinct, but is slowly coming back, thanks to history lovers like winery owners Ali Nemchonok and Andy DuVigneaud. Their slogan, “Bee Hunters deekin bahler fratti,” translated from Boontling means “Bee Hunters lookin’ for the best wine.” The duo sources grapes from across Mendocino, creating standouts such as the opulent Anderson Valley Broken Leg Vineyard Syrah and a Docker Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir that’s lively with tart red-fruit flavors. The artsy-casual tasting room downtown is pup-friendly, and you can impress everyone when you announce that “dog” in Boontling is “haireem,” originating from “hairy mouth.”14077 Hwy. 128, Boonville. beehunterwine.com

MendoVino

When the occasion calls for a small-batch, rare local bottle, wine-bar owner Michael Gordon is the man to know. His tiny lounge is layered with interesting delights such as a Murder Ridge Potato Patch Syrah, a 2020 field blend of which only 40 cases were produced. Gordon also owns Mendocino Country Store next door, stocked with taxidermied, costumed animals, including gunslinging cowboy groundhogs. 10481 Lansing St., Mendocino. mendovino.org

Tucked away in a redwood forest in Willits stands what’s likely to be the world’s tallest living Christmas tree — only accessible via train.

The brilliantly lit and decorated coastal redwood, towering at 222 feet tall, is Mr. Skunk’s Giant Christmas Tree. The festive conifer belongs to the famous Skunk Train in Northern California, which is offering holiday train rides to visit the tree through Dec. 31 (except on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).

Train rides depart from Skunk Train’s depot in Willits (299 E. Commercial St.) and wind through the redwoods to the grand Christmas tree. The trip includes complimentary hot chocolate and holiday cookies as well as Christmas music and games. Tickets are $68.35 per person, $12.49 per dog and free for infants 2 and under. VIP tickets are $100.65 per person and include advanced boarding, priority concessions and a commemorative gift. Learn more and purchase tickets on skunktrain.com.

According to Guinness World Records, the world’s tallest cut Christmas tree, recorded in December of 1950, was a 212-foot Douglas fir erected at Northgate Shopping Center in Seattle, Washington.

Since then, various other places have claimed to house the world’s tallest or largest holiday tree.

In 2019, the Citadel Outlets shopping center in Commerce, California, purported to have the world’s tallest Christmas tree, though it stood at just 115 feet. The city of Enid, Oklahoma, asserted to have the tallest, fresh-cut Christmas tree in 2021 — however, it stood at 140 feet (and came from a forest in Northern California).

No other known, fully decorated Christmas tree, living or cut, can top the Skunk Train’s 222-foot merry redwood. The only ones taller are artificial, like the 236-foot Christmas tree in Colombo, Sri Lanka — recorded in the Guinness Records in 2016 as the largest artificial Christmas tree.

Rustic Anderson Valley offers excellent wines, a laidback vibe and cozy tasting rooms. And, interestingly enough, at least two connections to Pierce Brosnan.

Need a respite from the dreariness of winter? How about a day or weekend trip just 60 miles north of Santa Rosa, yet seemingly hundreds of miles away in rustic charm and tranquility? Long to taste exceptional pinot noirs, sparkling wines made in the methode traditionelle style of France’s Champagne region and brisk, mouthwatering, aromatic white wines such as riesling, gewürztraminer and pinot blanc, without any snobbery?

If so, Anderson Valley in southwestern Mendocino County is for you. Drive north on Highway 101 to Cloverdale, turn west onto Highway 128, navigate a few hairpin turns, and you’ll soon be surrounded by towering redwoods, verdant winter meadows and a quiet peace perfect for alleviating post-holiday stress.

There are 27 tasting rooms in Anderson Valley, scattered in and around the tiny communities of Boonville, Philo and Navarro. As logging and apple orchards have diminished in the region, winegrowing has become a major financial driver, a host to visitors seeking the region’s wines and provider to outside wineries of prime grapes that command impressive prices. Travelers to and from the Mendocino Coast often pass through Anderson Valley, keeping these hamlets alive and productive.

Yet Anderson Valley was not an overnight winegrowing success. In 1964, Donald Edmeades, a Southern California physician, planted 24 acres of vines and hung a sign that read “Edmeades Folly” because the valley was believed to be too cool and foggy for ripening grapes. Yet Edmeades found some success, especially with gewürztraminer. In 1968, Tony and Gretchen Husch planted chardonnay, gewürztraminer and pinot noir nearby and established Husch Vineyards as Anderson Valley’s first new winery since Prohibition.

The worldwide splash came in 1982, when Champagne house Louis Roederer launched Roederer Estate in Philo to produce sparkling wines. Napa Valley’s Schramsberg Vineyards followed suit, buying Anderson Valley grapes for its sparkling wines, prizing the vibrant acidity in the fruit. Revered Russian River Valley pinot noir producer Williams Selyem tapped Anderson Valley’s Ferrington Vineyard starting in 1992, with founding winemaker Burt Williams later buying the only vineyard he ever owned, Morning Dew Ranch in Anderson Valley, in 1998.

These endorsements from established producers cast a glowing halo over Anderson Valley as a vital viticultural region, and demand for the wines is ever-increasing. To experience these wines, visit the tasting rooms; some require reservations, others welcome walk-ins and all offer a deeper experience than can be explained here. Click through the above gallery for more photos.

Goldeneye Winery

Founded in 1996 by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, Goldeneye rapidly became a benchmark wine producer in Anderson Valley. Among its current releases are a brut rosé sparkling wine, eight pinot noirs, a gewürztraminer and vin gris of pinot noir, all grown in Anderson Valley. The wines are typically bold and generous in fruit and can be sampled in a wide array of tastings. Reservations are highly recommended. The Essentials Tasting features current-release Goldeneye wines and selections from sister winery Migration. The Estate Tasting includes a guided wine-and-food pairing with current and library wines. Don’t miss the ATV tour of Goldeneye’s Confluence Estate Vineyard, which includes tastings, charcuterie and cheese. 9200 Highway 128, Philo, 707-895-3202, goldeneyewinery.com.

Navarro Vineyards

Ted Bennett and Deborah Cahn fled Southern California for a simpler life in Anderson Valley and planted their first vineyard in 1974. Their Navarro Vineyards wines are now known for their freshness and finesse, with their muscat blancs, gewürztraminers and rieslings winning multiple gold medals every year. Chardonnays and pinot noirs are excellent, too, made by Jim Klein in an elegant, mouthwatering style. The tasting room is rustically simple and small, the staff attentive and enthusiastic. Seating areas outside offer lazy-day views of the valley. Navarro wines are sold largely through the tasting room, wine club and direct order; visiting the winery is the best way to discover these gems. 601 Highway 128, Philo, 800-537-9463, navarrowine.com.

Pennyroyal Farm

This Bennett-Cahn sister winery includes a creamery, where Sarah Cahn Bennett oversees the cheesemaking, using milk from the family’s goats and sheep. She and her brother, Aaron Cahn Bennett, have brought an ultimate-experience vibe to Pennyroyal, with its own line of wines, cheeses, farm tours, sparkling wine brunches and pairing opportunities. Pennyroyal is an Anderson Valley institution, with a farm-first philosophy. 14930 Highway 128, Boonville, 800-956-8909, pennyroyalfarm.com.

Roederer Estate

Talk about cementing a California wine region as the real deal! Louis Roederer Champagne came to Anderson Valley in 1982, impressed by the region’s ability to grow high-acid chardonnay and pinot noir for sparkling wine. Its tête de cuvée, vintage L’Ermitage Brut ($50), is on par with some of the finest bubblies of Champagne. The Roederer Estate nonvintage brut is widely available and attractively priced at around $25 (often discounted). In the tasting room, you can sample vintage and nonvintage brut rosés, plus bubblies from magnum bottles — a rare treat. 4501 Highway 128, Philo, 707-895-2288, roedererestate.com.

The Madrones

This lodging/dining/tasting room complex hosts Drew Family Cellars, Long Meadow Ranch Vineyards and Smith Story Wine Cellars. It’s a great stop to try and buy several wines. Jason Drew focuses on pinot noir and syrah from Mendocino Ridge, Anderson Valley and the Yorkville Highlands. Long Meadow Ranch, based in Napa Valley, has this Anderson Valley outpost to show off its chardonnays and pinot noirs from the region. Eric Smith and Alison Story of Smith Story Wine Cellars use Anderson Valley grapes in their wines as well as those from the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain and Russian River Valley. The Madrones, 9000 Highway 128, Philo, 707-895-2955, themadrones.com.

Toulouse Vineyards and Winery

Proprietor/winemaker Vern Boltz and his team go the warm-and-friendly route in their comfy tasting room, with views of Hendy Woods State Park and its magnificent giant redwoods. Dogs are welcome and the wine offerings are broad: pinot gris, rosé of pinot noir, pinot noir, zinfandel, merlot and the rare valdiguié, a light, fruity red with moderate tannins and cracking acidity. 8001 Highway 128, Philo, 707-895-2828, toulousevineyards.com.

Disco Ranch

It’s not a tasting room, but qualifies here because it’s a wine bar, wine retailer and specialty food market that’s a gathering place for locals and a place for visitors to taste Anderson Valley wines from producers that don’t have tasting rooms. Wine industry veteran Wendy Lamer opened Disco Ranch in the historic Horn of Zeese building in Boonville. She offers wine flights, pairings and Anderson Valley wines that can’t be found elsewhere. Not thirsty? Stop for lunch. 14025 Highway 128, Boonville, 707-901-5002, discoranch.com.

Need a reset? If you’re not a fan of snow, traffic, and crowds, skip the trip to Tahoe this winter and try a restorative weekend by the Pacific Ocean. My husband and I recently spent two nights split between the Sonoma and Mendocino coasts. It was everything we needed: a chance to unplug, relax, and spend quality time together. Here’s how we spent our weekend – click through the above gallery for photos.

DAY 1: SONOMA COAST

Friday afternoon

We called ahead and requested an early check-in at Timber Cove Resort in order to maximize daylight time. The weather couldn’t have been better: high 60s without a cloud in the December sky.

[Enter our contest to win a weekend at Timber Cove Resort]

The oceanside resort, located in Jenner, was originally built in 1963 as a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired A-frame with redwood beams. In the early days, it was a shagadelic party pad that attracted all sorts of characters—including Hugh Hefner and his bunnies—but the place lost its luster over the years. In 2016, renovations were completed and the new Timber Cove has a cozy, modern hippy vibe with chic, mid-century accents.

After quickly settling into our suite, making note of the fireplace and soaking tub, we hurried out to catch the day’s remaining rays. The resort has roughly two miles of coastal trails to stroll, just steps from the lobby. During our excursion, we discovered a lover’s cove, where dozens of couples had carved their initials inside hearts in the bluff. I imagine at least a few proposals going down here. Back at home base, we hopped on the outdoor ping pong table (they also have billiards and foosball), battling back and forth until it was time to catch the sunset.

Our suite’s private deck looked straight out at the ocean, providing a perfect sunset viewing spot. Not all of Timber Cove’s rooms have an ocean view but, even though it will cost you more, I highly recommend splurging on booking one. After all, the view is the amenity here; it’s the reason for your visit.

To set the sunset mood, we put some vinyl on the Crosley LP record player (every room has one) and picked a bottle of wine from our stash (the best part about a local getaway is that you can pack as much wine as you want in the car). Once the sun had disappeared into the ocean, we brought the rest of the bottle to the communal fire pit, a great place for chatting with resort guests and making new friends.

Friday evening

Unlike the coastal towns of Bodega Bay or Mendocino, there are no restaurants or bars or markets nearby Timber Cove. And that’s why I love it here. This is the ultimate staycation; a place that encourages you to sit back, relax, connect, and unplug.

Around 6 p.m., the once-empty lobby (officially named the Great Room) began to fill up, transforming into a lively gathering place for resort guests – a mix of families, couples, even a few well-behaved pups. Wanting to keep things casual, we opted for a seat at the bar instead of a table at the onsite restaurant Coast Kitchen. We were still able to pick from the full menu and we both ordered a burger and cocktail.

The Great Room has a myriad of small lounge areas, so after finishing our dinner we posted up for some old-fashioned fun with classic board games. From Backgammon to Chess to Battleship, everyone around us was busy playing games and it was truly refreshing to see people engaged in such a simple pleasure, instead of being attached to their phones.

Saturday morning

I woke up just in time to catch the 9 a.m. yoga class. Every Saturday through January 26 (it’s possible they will extend it), local company Unbeaten Yoga comes to teach a free class to resort guests. This wasn’t your average flow class: the instructor announced that we’d be doing Kundalini Yoga, which combines mantras, flow movements, intense breathing exercises, and sound therapy. I left feeling incredibly refreshed and energized.

Coast Kitchen serves breakfast, which you can order to your room, but we settled for a coffee on the deck after my yoga session and sadly bid adieu to our view.

DAY 2: MENDOCINO COAST

Saturday afternoon

Back on the road and headed north to the Mendocino Coast, we were eager to reach our next destination: Harbor House Inn in Elk.

Harbor House was built in 1916. Once owned by the Goodyear company, who used the home to showcase their lumber, the inn has changed hands many times over the years. It was recently remodeled under current ownership and reopened last spring. Like Timber Cove, Harbor House is situated right on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. As a centerpiece of their panoramic view is a unique sea stack formation named Wharf Rock.

Our suite, the Oceansong, certainly lived up to its name. We could see the ocean from every room: the sitting room, the bedroom, even the bathroom, which had a window over the clawfoot tub. A pair of french doors opened onto a private terrace.

There was one thing noticeably missing from our room – a TV – and we had to dig through the welcome manual to locate the WiFi password. But that’s all part of what makes Harbor House a place for romance.

Once again, we wanted to make the most of the daylight and so we set about exploring the inn’s grounds, which features gardens where the chef grows fresh produce, chickens, a hammock, and Adirondacks for taking in the view. My favorite feature, by far, was the private cove. Walking down several steep flights of steps, we reached a beach that was ours alone. We climbed through caves, hunted for abalone shells, and wrote our names in the sand.

Saturday evening

We took in another perfect sunset from another ocean-view deck. Afterwards, we got ready for dinner at the inn, which was the main reason we chose to stay here.

Mendocino County isn’t known for its fine dining. Most places are so casual you could wear sweatpants to dinner and no one would blink an eye. But Harbor House is changing that, and I’ll call it right now: I think they could nab Mendocino County’s first Michelin star.

I counted just eight tables in the ocean-view dining room and the first thing I noticed when we sat down was that there were chopsticks in place of traditional flatware. Before us was a 10-course tasting menu and we opted for the wine pairings, delighted to find that three of those pairings would be sake. We even got to pick our own locally-made ceramic cup to sip it from.

The majority of courses featured seafood and rightly so (we’re on the coast, after all), running the gamut from albacore and Dungeness crab three ways—including a Dungeness crab tea—to sea urchin, abalone stew, and a toasted seaweed ice cream for dessert. There was one red meat course, Potter Valley lamb and lamb belly (one of my favorites), and several vegetarian dishes. It was not only one of the best meals we’ve ever had, but also the most creative.

Sunday morning

I was still full when I woke up on Sunday morning, but when the breakfast tray arrived to our room, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. We enjoyed our coffee with a colorful spread of pastries, a thick slice of prosciutto with cheese, and a phenomenal hot egg dish before another sad goodbye to a million-dollar ocean view.

After two perfectly clear days, the drive home was gloomy and gray, matching how we felt about leaving the coast.

Harbor House offseason rates start at $339 mid-week and range up to $709 on weekends.

After a long day of wine tasting in Anderson Valley, hiking the coastal trails, and nibbling on fresh caught seafood in Fort Bragg, you can now go “off the grid” at a new “glamping” site just south of downtown Mendocino.

Mendocino Grove, the latest addition to the North Coast glamping scene, bills itself as a campground that offers a “modern camping experience” for those of us who like the idea of washing our tired, hiked out body in a luxurious hot shower and then drying our skin with a nice, warm organic cotton towel.

Like other glamping sites in the North Bay, Mendocino Grove harkens back to a time when San Franciscans would travel north on their vacation, setting up camp on the coast, complete with dining tables, champagne, and their finest outfits. Today, locals and big city dwellers who’d like to vacation in a natural environment, but prefer the amenities of a decent hotel, book a tent, trailer or cabin at a glamping site.

The Mendocino Grove property features 60 canvas tents with the kind of comfort you’d normally find in a hotel: queen size beds, cotton linens, down comforters, wool blankets, and patios with leather butterfly chairs and lanterns.

While suited for couples in search of a romantic getaway, Mendocino Grove is also family friendly. The property has larger tents with queen and bunk beds, complete with hip Bohemian-inspired furniture and private picnic tables and fire pits. And, regarding that luxurious hot shower: there is an onsite communal bath house with private showers, EO body care products, cotton towels, bathrooms, and all the necessities.

Complimentary continental breakfast is served each morning and there are onsite gas barbecues. After a day of hiking or wine tasting, glamping guests can settle into a communal fire pit, play bocce ball, corn hole or a classic board game, use one of many gas barbeques, or chill out on a hammock. And like any camping site, they offer s’mores. (Less outfitted guests have the option to purchase a camp box, which includes a pots and pans, tablecloth, plates, glasses, mugs, bowls, utensils – everything you need to prepare your organic camping chili.)

Kayaking, canoeing, and hiking are some of the many activities that the area around Mendocino Grove offers. The historic town of Mendocino, located a mere five minutes north from the glamping site, has a handful of boutiques, bookstores and art galleries. Head a bit further north to Fort Bragg’s Noyo Harbor for a bite of the fresh catch of the day at the Noyo River Grill (707-962-9050; 32150 N. Harbor Dr., Fort Bragg). Anderson Valley, a wine region regarded for their pinot noir and Alsatian varietals like riesling, is a 20-minute drive away. Must-visit wineries include Goldeneye Winery (707-895-3202; 9200 CA-12, Philo), Smith Story Wine Cellars (707-494-5575; 9000 CA-128, Philo) and Navarro Vineyards & Winery (707-895-3686; 5601 Hwy 128, Philo).

And don’t fret, Mendocino Grove is not truly “off the grid” – they offer wifi and electricity, so you can share those Instagrammable camping moments with your biggest Facebook and Instagram fans.

Mendocino Grove’s season is from May 11-October 31, with rates starting at $142.50. Dog friendly. mendocinogrove.com.
